Director - Buying (Rice Category) | Staples | Leading B2B Marketplace
Roles & responsibility:
We are looking for a highly experienced Senior Buyer for the Rice category within our Staples vertical. This individual will be responsible for end-to-end buying, sourcing, and vendor development for rice, ensuring strong value chains, high-quality procurement, competitive pricing, and consistent availability to meet our pan-India demand.
This is a strategic role that requires deep domain expertise in staples (especially rice), strong relationships with millers/suppliers, and sharp commercial acumen to drive category growth in a fast-paced e-commerce environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own the procurement and buying strategy for the Rice category (Sona Masoori, Basmati, etc.)
- Lead origin sourcing by identifying and onboarding key suppliers, millers, and aggregators
- Build sustainable vendor relationships, drive TOTs, JBPs, and long-term sourcing contracts
- Ensure consistent availability, pricing, quality, and inventory turns
- Leverage data to optimize buying decisions, pricing, and margins
- Drive cost savings through origin efficiency and procurement optimization
- Collaborate with supply chain, quality, demand planning, and private label teams
- Understand regional consumption patterns and customer preferences to tailor assortment
- Maintain compliance with food safety regulations and internal audit standards
- Track industry trends and competitor pricing to maintain category competitiveness
Required Skills & Qualifications:
-12+ years of experience in buying, sourcing, or category management for rice/staples
- Experience in leading rice procurement from millers, FPOs, traders, and agri-markets
- Strong negotiation, vendor management, and contract handling skills
- Demonstrated ability to manage category P&L, margins, and supply risk
- Knowledge of mandi dynamics, toll-packing, and regional sourcing clusters
- Experience working in e-commerce, modern trade, or large retail/FMCG setups
- Fluent in regional languages (e.g., Hindi, Kannada, Telugu) is a plus
- Proficiency in using Excel, ERP tools, and data platforms for buying decisions
Preferred Background:
- Worked in companies like Udaan, BigBasket, Amazon, Flipkart, Reliance, Spencer's, Adani Wilmar, Bharti Retail, ITC, or similar
- Exposure to both B2B and B2C formats
