JOB DESCRIPTION/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Reporting to the Chief Executive, the Chief Finance, Operations & Systems (CFOS) will be a core member of the organisations management, actively contributing to overall strategy and ensuring that finance, administration, compliance, and IT systems are fully aligned with its mission and objectives.

- The CFOS will be accountable for the organisations financial integrity, administrative excellence, governance compliance, and operational efficiency across multiple offices in India.

- This includes leading finance, administration, and IT teams, ensuring robust controls, transparent systems, and efficient service delivery.

- A critical dimension of this role is working in close collaboration with programme teams, ensuring that enabling functions anticipate and meet their evolving needs.

- The incumbent will need to operate at significant scale, overseeing an extensive portfolio of grants and resources, guiding large and dispersed teams, and ensuring the organisation continues to meet the highest standards of financial stewardship and compliance.

Key Job Responsibilities:

Financial Stewardship & Planning:

- Guide multi-year budgeting and resource planning so that funds are directed toward mission priorities and long-term programme sustainability.

- Provide leadership on treasury management and liquidity planning to ensure stability of ongoing operations.

- Share clear, timely financial insights that help programme leaders make evidence-based choices.

- Shape financial systems and controls that balance flexibility for programme needs with accountability to stakeholders.

Donor Relations & Grant Oversight:

- Produce donor financial reports that are accurate, timely, and fully compliant with contractual and statutory requirements.

- Conduct due diligence and financial reviews of partners and vendors, ensuring integrity and transparency in fund utilisation.

- Strengthen the financial management capacities of programme partners and grantees through mentorship and system support.

- Maintain robust documentation and audit trails that build trust and demonstrate stewardship of resources.

Compliance, Governance & Risk:

- Lead statutory audits, regulatory filings, and donor-mandated reviews, ensuring deadlines are met without exception.

- Develop a risk management framework that anticipates financial, operational, and programme delivery challenges.

- Ensure that all finance and operations practices adhere to laws relevant to not-for-profit entities.

- Promote an organisational culture of ethical practice, transparency, and accountability in all financial dealings.

Operations, Administrative and IT Systems:

- Strengthen procurement, contracting, and travel processes so that they are transparent, cost-effective, and mission-aligned.

- Provide oversight of day-to-day administrative functions, enabling staff to focus on programme delivery.

- Embed value-for-money principles across operations, ensuring resources are used efficiently without compromising outcomes.

- Continuously improve systems to make them responsive, user-friendly, and compliant with donor expectations.

- Oversee IT functions and ensure compliance with relevant procedures and standards.

Capacity Building & External Engagement:

- Build financial literacy and budget ownership among programme staff through training and regular engagement.

- Represent the organisation with donors, auditors, board committees, and regulators on finance and compliance matters.

- Mentor and support finance and operations staff, nurturing professional development and commitment to organisational values.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES:

Qualifications:

- Chartered Accountant (CA) with at least 12 years of experience, including 5 years in a senior leadership role.

- Company Secretary (CS) qualification is desirable.

Experience & Skills:

- Mission-aligned finance leadership: Led finance, compliance, and admin functions in complex, multi-programme settings (large NGOs, foundations, or comparable organisations), balancing stewardship with programme enablement.

- Regulatory fluency: Hands-on command of Indian GAAP and the regulatory and compliance landscape for not-for-profitsFCRA, Income Tax, Section 8/Trust/Society frameworks, CSR rules, and relevant labour lawstranslating requirements into practical controls.

- Data-driven planning: Advanced analytical ability for budgeting, forecasting, scenario building, and risk assessment that informs strategic decisions and donor discussions.

- Systems & tools: Comfortable working across ERPs/accounting platforms and productivity suites; able to improve processes, controls, and reporting workflows.

- People & partnerships: Proven success leading geographically dispersed teams; skilled at collaborating with programme leads, partners, donors, auditors, and regulators.

- Clear communicator: Can distil complex financial information into concise insights for senior leadership and accessible guidance for non-finance colleagues.
